Sam Smith, of Marietta, Oklahoma, has been said to “live and breathe the sport of reining.” Based in Marietta, Oklahoma, Sam is a top NRHA judge, reining horse trainer and rider. He has been in the reining horse industry almost since the beginning of the NRHA. Sam has shown all disciplines of Western horses. With 30+ years experience in the horse industry, Sam has ridden such great horses as Winders Dude, Dry Oil Bar, Lydiah Pinkham Lore, Gun Town Charlie, Future Enterprises, Diamond Lil, The Advocate, Pure Lil Peppy, CR Bounty Hunter, Dry Desert Storm, Hollywood White, Hollywood Knight Out (pictured to the left with Sam), Dunnits Daisy, Dox Lucky Starlight, Lil Ruf Pep E Chex, Okies Check Mate, Ruf N Smart. Miss Brim Star, Sailin Starlight, Downunder Diva, Miss Brim Peppy, The Dude is Ruf, Agaze Juice and Stun Gun. Sam consistently takes his horses to top of their class with his NRHA lifetime earnings in excess of $570,000.
It is this lifelong dedication to promoting the NRHA and the preparation of horses for the sport that has enabled him to be successful, not only as a rider but also as a coach. Sam has coached countless Youth, Open and Non-Pro circuit champions and year-end winners and “demonstrates great patience with all of his riders” and “truly wants them to succeed.” In 2016, he was named the NRHA Non Pro Coach of The Year. In addition to Smith’s superior coaching skills, he has served on several professional committees and is an NRHA Judge. He is active in the NRCHA and the SRCHA, as well.
